Attachments & links on the timeline

You can attach files, images, and videos to and paste links into your timeline posts. Attachments can be uploaded from your device, the file library, or Google Drive or SharePoint if you're using the Google or Microsoft add-on.

Files uploaded from your device into a timeline post are saved with the post, not in the file library. Deleting the post will also delete the files. Also, previews aren't available for Google Drive and SharePoint files—you'll need to open the files in the respective tool to view the files.

For information about supported file formats that generate a preview and can be opened and viewed directly on the platform, read Supported file formats for previews.

How links are displayed

If only one link is present in a post, the link preview will take up the full width of the post. However, when multiple links or other attachments are present, links will be displayed in a more compact manner. The image and title that is displayed in link previews are obtained from the original page source.

When you hover over a link in a published timeline post, an Open button appears. You can select anywhere on the link box to open the link in the same window.

You can remove the link previews altogether by selecting X on them when creating a timeline post.

How images are displayed

Images are presented in a flexible grid that adjusts based on their size.

If you upload only one image, it will be displayed at a larger size. However, when you upload multiple images or include one image with additional attachments, all the images will have the same height while their widths will vary based on each image's original width. Haiilo doesn't compress images but instead uses their original resolution.

All images you upload will appear in the timeline post. In the mobile app, the display shows one large image, two smaller images, and a +X button for all other images.

How files are displayed

If only one file is present in a post, it will display as a larger part of the post with a preview. However, when multiple files or other media types are present, files will be displayed as smaller boxes with thumbnails.

Files display information such as title, file format, and file size. Files from Google Drive or SharePoint are also appropriately labeled. Files are ordered alphabetically by title.

When you hover over a file in a published timeline post, Preview and Download buttons appear. You can select anywhere on the file box to open the preview pop-up.

When a preview is generated for posts with one file, the preview is generated by the file itself. Typically, the first page of the file is displayed. Haiilo has no control over the preview generation.

How videos are displayed

If you upload videos to a timeline post from your device or add them from the file library, they are treated as files. This means you won't see a preview of the video on the timeline and it cannot be played directly; however, you can play most videos by opening them in the file preview pop-up.

Video embeds, such as YouTube or Microsoft Stream videos, display in the timeline post for easy viewing. When multiple videos are added, they appear in a 50-50 split grid.

Videos are played using the browser's <video> tag. The videos uploaded play in their original format without any conversion.
