Using widgets in a Content app

The content app is a powerful tool for providing information within your page or community. It serves as a blank canvas where you can freely assemble various widgets to display your content exactly as you desire. This flexibility can make it challenging to know how to build your content app effectively. Ultimately, the content app encourages creativity — there are few limits to what you can achieve with it.

Plan your content app

When building a content app, it's essential to start with a clear idea or vision of the information you intend to provide. This will assist you in deciding which widgets to use. In general, you can ask yourself these questions:

  • What is my content app's intended use case? What do I want my users to get out of the information I aim to provide?
  • What is the most important information I will share? What format works best for this information: text, video, images, or a combination?
  • How can I make my content engaging? Can I add colors or visuals to enhance it?

Because the content app is presented as one continuous page, we suggest keeping the information short and engaging. This will help ensure that users can quickly grasp what they need without feeling overwhelmed.

If you have more complex information to present, we recommend using the Wiki app instead. Learn more in Knowledge: Wiki or Content App?

Build your content app

Once you have at least a basic idea of what you want to include in your content app, you can start building it with the layout. Don't worry; the simple process of adding rows, columns, and widgets allows you to experiment and find the layout that works best for your needs.

While building your content app, we recommend keeping it deactivated for users until it is ready.

  1. Build a suitable layout: Select add widget row.png to add rows. Choose your rows based on the correct number and width of columns you need for your content. Remember, each widget gets its width from the column it is in. So, if you, for example, want to add a rich text editor to the content app, make sure a column is wide enough to allow for easy reading.
  2. Add widgets: Select add widget button.png under a column to add a widget to it. Choose the widgets that best showcase your content and experiment with different options to find what works best for you.
  3. Customize the content: Edit the content within each widget to match your specific needs. Add and format any text, upload images, add links to other sources, and more. The customizations you do depend on the widgets you select.
  4. Publish: Select Done to save your content app and then activate it to make it available to your users.

In the below example, we've used the following widgets to create an information app for our Internal Enablement page: Rich Text Editor widget, Callout, User profile, Divider, and Image.
