You can structure the content in your wiki app hierarchically to make it easier to navigate and understand. By default, wiki articles are arranged chronologically based on their creation date, with the newest articles displayed first. However, you can manually sort and move the articles for custom organization to create the hierarchy of information that best suits your use case.
Understand the wiki hierarchy
To gain an understanding of your wiki's hierarchy, you can access the wiki app overview. This overview lists all your articles and illustrates the hierarchy you've created. When discussing a wiki app hierarchy, we often reference three types of articles:
- Home article: A home article allows you to define a starting point for your wiki. This is the article that users see first when selecting your wiki app. It allows you to create a welcoming and descriptive table of contents for your wiki. You can only have one home article and it's defined in the app configuration. If you don't define a home article, users see the wiki app overview as the starting point.
- Parent articles: Parent articles stand alone and act as the first entries in the wiki. They are often overview articles or topic introductions, linking to other articles for more in-detail information.
-
Sub-articles: Sub-articles are articles placed under another article, effectively creating a hierarchy under its parent article. Sub-articles often contain the instructions and knowledge that you want to share within your wiki.
- A sub-article can be both a sub-article and a parent article to other sub-articles. This allows you to create multiple layers of structure in your wiki.
Your articles are organized into levels in the hierarchy. The parent article is the first level, its sub-articles are the second level, and any sub-article's sub-articles are the third level, and so on. There's no limit to the number of levels you can have in your wiki.
Creating a wiki article follows the same process, regardless of which type of article you're creating. The only distinction is the Create in field. Choosing a parent in that field designates the article as a sub-article. Learn more in Creating wiki articles.
