News: Blog or Timeline App?

When it comes to sharing news in Haiilo, you have several options. Two of the most effective apps for communication and engagement are the Blog App and the Timeline App. Both apps offer unique features that cater to different aspects of content sharing and management.

Aim of the Apps

Both apps aim to enhance communication and improve engagement within your team. However, they serve different purposes:

Blog App

The Blog App is ideal for polished editorial publishing. It offers sleek layouts, customizable widgets, and scheduling features, making it perfect for articles and important updates. Use the rich text editor to format content easily and schedule posts to be published on behalf of a page or community. The Blog App is essential for showcasing important information in a well-organized manner. It can be used for the following use cases:

  • Share detailed updates on company policies, new product launches, and industry insights
  • Publishing thought leadership articles and employee spotlights

Timeline App

The Timeline App prioritizes swift and efficient communication, making it ideal for urgent announcements and casual updates. Unlike the Blog App, it focuses on a clear, chronological presentation, ensuring that essential updates are shared quickly and easily.

  • Announcement of company-wide events, share real-time updates on project milestones and celebrate employee achievements
  • Posting quick reminders and meeting summaries

Examples

To make both apps and their use cases more tangible, let's provide you with some typical examples.

Blog App

We use the Blog App to share general knowledge and interesting articles. It's our go-to platform for detailed and polished editorial content. In this example, we chose a two-column layout and different widgets, such as the rich text editor, the user profile, and a poll widget, to ask for the reader's honest and anonymous opinion.

Timeline App

The Timeline App is used for more immediate updates and strongly focuses on the information itself to be provided rather than on layout or editorial capabilities. All news and events can be shared here, serving as a dynamic communication channel that instantly notifies users of ongoing activities.

Further tips & tricks

  • Consider using the trending blog articles widget on your homepage(s) as it displays the most viewed, liked, and commented-on articles, including those in sources users aren't subscribed to but have permission to view, e.g., public pages. This is extremely helpful if the latest blog article widget on your homepage(s) is configured to display only selected blog apps.
  • For an ideal platform setup and usage, it is essential to understand the difference between the timeline app and the timeline widget, as well as other features related to the timeline. Make sure all of your users/admins also understand the difference between deleting timeline posts and shared content, e.g., blog posts.
  • Looking for a way to publish short breaking news reports without detailed information, similar to news banners on N-TV? Take a look at how to set up a newsticker with the blog app.
