You can create timeline posts on the timeline. You need at least the "Create timeline items" permission to create timeline posts.
Read Timeline overview for information on the different elements' timelines on which you can post and how the post is visible.
Create a post
- Go to the timeline on which you want to post.
- Select the text box at the top of a timeline element. By default, it displays a "What are you working on?" message.
- If you cannot see a box, you don't have permission to post on that timeline.
- Write and configure your post
- Select Post to publish your post
You can load new timeline posts that you've yet to see by selecting the Load X new update(s) on top of your timeline. New posts can be distinguished by a badge. The badge disappears after a few seconds of being in the user's view.
Timeline posts that are longer than ~750 characters will be shortened, and you can select Read more to see the full post.
Once you publish a timeline post, you can edit the text in your post until another user reacts, comments, or shares it. After that, you won't be able to make any more edits unless you can access moderator mode. However, admins can enable users to edit a post even after it has been interacted with by activating a setting in Administration > System settings > General settings.
Configure a post
A timeline post can be formatted and configured in various ways. Certain options are only visible to those with specific permissions.
- Use Markdown: You can format your post's text using Markdown. The options include bold, italic, lists, quotes, etc. To learn more about using Markdown, select in the timeline post box.
-
Attach files: You can add files to your post from your device or the file library.
- Files uploaded from your device are stored with the timeline post and not in the file library. This means if the post is deleted, so is the file.
- Some file formats display a preview under your timeline post for users to view. Learn more in File preview.
- Mark post as sticky: You can pin posts to the top of the timeline for users, so they have to unmark them manually on their own timelines when they've read them. Learn more in Creating sticky timeline posts.
- Lock post: You can lock posts to remove users' ability to comment and like them. You need "Create locked timeline items" permission to lock posts.
- Send kudos: You can send kudos to appreciate or celebrate your colleagues and their work. Kudos needs to be activated for your platform. Learn more in Sending and receiving kudos.
-
Submit as: You can decide if you're publishing the post as yourself or as a page, community, or event you're an admin of. This determines the name that displays as the post creator. If you post as a page or community, the page and community's admins can Reveal the author to view your name. Hence, publishing is never completely anonymous. To post as a page, community, or event, you need to be an admin of the element and have at least one of these permissions:
- "Act in the name of a page, community, or event (locally)": You can post as the page, community, or event on that specific page's, community's, or event's timeline.
- "Act in the name of a page, community, or event (global)": You can post as the page, community, or event anywhere on the platform.
